Maurice Maeterlinck was a great writer who has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1911. One of the main themes in his work is the meaning of life; and even in this book on bees you can find philosophical bits on this theme. Maeterlinck writes so beautifully that even if you're not interested in bees at all, I would recommend downloading this book and giving it a try.
To give you an idea of the manner of writing of Maeterlinck and the content of this book I will copy one paragraph of the first chapter, namely the first phrases of 'section 5' of this chapter:
Afin de suivre aussi simplement que possible l'histoire annuelle de la
ruche, nous en prendrons une qui se réveille au printemps et se remet au
travail, et nous verrons se dérouler dans leur ordre naturel les grands
épisodes de la vie de l'abeille, à savoir: la formation et le départ de
l'essaim, la fondation de la cité nouvelle, la naissance, les combats et
le vol nuptial des jeunes reines, le massacre des mâles et le retour du
sommeil de l'hiver. Chacun de ces épisodes apportera de lui-même tous
les éclaircissements nécessaires sur les lois, les particularités, les
habitudes, les événements qui le provoquent ou l'accompagnent, en sorte
qu'au bout de l'année apicole, qui est brève et dont l'activité ne
s'étend guère que d'avril à la fin de septembre, nous aurons rencontré
tous les mystères de la maison du miel.

I highly recommend this philosophical book about bees to anyone who loves to read beautifully written non-fiction. This book will not teach you how to keep bees though.
